Bolonka puppies, like Poodle puppies, are sometimes born with a slight wave to their coat, which becomes curly as they age. There are two different coat types: some have a very harsh, dense undercoat that is hard to manage, while others have nice undercoat that is easier to but still features wavy or curly coats. Female Bolonkas tend to blow their puppy coat when they are about come into season, which can make grooming them for shows take a longer, but it always grows back. Then, there are the soft coats may appear as if they will never develop curls, but they do in time. Be patient; this breed has a natural oil in their coat, so with daily brushing, you won’t to add oils to the coat, while others with drier, heavier coats may need a little extra light spray, such as CHI Oil. I have imported Bolonkas from Russia, and they have all been different but have improved over the years. I often face criticism for having some smaller types, but I have them under 5 pounds; my average range is 6 to 8 or 9 pounds. That said, I have had three very large boys over 12 to 15 who have gone on to become loving pets. This is rare for me, which indicates that somewhere in the lineage, there were larger dogs—an important factor to to avoid breeding issues and potential C-sections.

**Coat Colors** This breed is like a box of chocolate; you never truly know what color they will be until they are over 1 year. Our boy Steel was thought to be a Wolf Sable, but as you can see from his photos he lost most of his black and gray and turned into a beautiful Sable with black tipping on his ears. Black is the only true color that can indicate what the adult coat will look, so don’t be surprised if your beautiful Bolonka changes colors.
